1 Description[edit | edit source]
Scantech XTI thickness gauges use X-ray measurement. Be aware of the fact, that x-ray radiation is harmful.
2 Electrical Connection[edit | edit source]
Since on some lines there have been misunderstandings according the In-/Outputs for the scanners, here is a brief explanation which signals from BMS are which signals for Scantech:
X65:L / X65:N / X65:PE --> 230VAC Supply from BMS-Side
X63:1 / X63:2 --> BMS "emerg. stop", Scantech "Estop 1" (Scanner has two possible E-Stop inputs, only this one is used from us)
X63:3 / X63:4 --> Scantech "Estop 2", not used --> jumpered
X63:5 / X63:6 --> BMS "disable drive", Scantech "Sheet Break" --> Enable output for scanner traversing, is FALSE in "good" condition!
X63:19 / X63:20 --> BMS 24VDC supply / Park Position Input

3 PVSS Gauge Setup[edit | edit source]
3.1 Page Drive[edit | edit source]
Scanner Speeds:
Scanning: Traversing speed setpoint for Scanning on film. Suggested value 1 scan per minute.
Reference Search: Speed setpoint searching the reference position. Suggested value 5cm/s.
Positions:
Scan Limit: Position Limits for the scanner’s traversing movement.
Reference Position: Needs to be adjusted correctly. Move Scanner to 0mm (CL) and correct Reference Position accordingly. Suggested value e.g. -3788mm.
Note: Scantech’s control uses no negative Positions. On the Scanners driveside the position is 0mm. To adjust our values, reference position must be negative in this case.
MD-Mode:
Position: Position Setpoint for MD-Trend
GoTo: Moves the scanner to the MD-Position.
Start/Stop: Switches the fix position telegram on or off

Standardize
Scantech Scanners use two different kinds of standardization.
Offset measurement corrects the background noise and is carried out during standardization.
Gain measurement corrects quickly changing values like ambient temperature and air pressure. It is carried out at every scan (if selected) and during standardization.
A complete standardization (or zeroing) is triggered with the pushbutton or after the set time interval and contains the following steps: - Move Offsheet
- switch off X-Ray device
- wait until device cools down (Cooldown time)
- measurement of “air” (time value Duration Offset)
- Correction of Offset
- Switch on X-Ray device
- Wait Tube Warmup Time
- Measurement “air” (time value Duration Gain)
- Correction of Gain
Interval Setpoint: Time Interval for automatic standardisation. Suggested value every 4 hours.
Selection ON/OFF: Activates automatic timed standardisation. Suggested value ON.
Gain measurement is triggered after every scan, while the scanner is stopping outside the film.
It is done when the stopping point is outside the given limits, so set those limits inside the traversing positions.
It can be selected if the gain measurement is done on left, right or both turning points.
Meas. Selection Left: (De-)activates Gain correction at every scan at left turning point. Suggested value ON.
Meas. Selection Right: (De-)activates Gain correction at every scan at rightturning point. Suggested value OFF.
Limit Left: Measurement is only carried out, if turning position is bigger than Limit. Suggested value Left Scan Limit +500mm.
Limit Right: Measurement is only carried out, if turning position is bigger than Limit. Suggested value Left Scan Limit -500mm.
Offset measurement is done with every standardization.
ZeroProfile
Scantech uses two separate profiles for the zero compensation.
Scantech recommends to perform a zero profile compensation once a month.
Zero Profile selection: Suggested value ON.
Air Profile with Offset:
USed to display the actual air profile with an adjustable offset to properly display a scan "in thin air".
Can only be started after clicking "Park Position Stop".
Difference between normal "Park Position" Button and "Park Position Stop" Button:
"Park Position Stop" sends the scanner to PrkPos and switches off the x-Ray tube, while "Park Position" leaves the x-ray on. We usually keep the tube on, because it needs time to heat up and delivers non reliable scans while warming up.
Calibration
Factor: Multiplication Factor fpr Measurement signal
Scanner Thickness, Lab Thickness, Calculated Factor: Enter actual thickness from scanner and lab to calculate new calibration factor
Set Factor: Take automatically calculated factor
3.3 Page Status[edit | edit source]
Display of available status bits from Scantech. Also contains the Button to switch ON/OFF the X-Ray Sensor.
Note: During movement towards MD Position it might happen, that the sensor is switched OFF and doesnt come on again automatically.
In this case use this button to switch on the sensor again.
4 Trouble Shooting[edit | edit source]
It occurred on two projects that the status signal for PARK position was revoked as soon as we took away our enable output.
This is wrong. The park position signal must always be active as long as the scanner is in park position - regardless of the status of our enable signal.
On Scantech side there is a setting for the digital outputs. This one needs to be set to "Idle At Park".
It occurred that the scanner refused the web limits and set WinCC Scan limits. Within the Scantech software the Checkbox "FullRange" must be unchecked.
