Elin Motors Aegis ring installation

1 Info[edit | edit source]

We want to make sure that there is no current flowing from motor shaft in direction to the gearbox. Therefore we install a grounding brush (the Aegis ring) on the motor DE shaft that points to the gearbox.

2 Check if all the parts we need are on site[edit | edit source]

PART1, insulation base Attention:
DO NOT USE THIS ANY MORE.

PART2, Aegis ring.

PART3, 2 flexible grounding cables.

PART4, 2 bags of small bolt and clip( 3 bolts & clips each bag).

PART5, 1 bag of big bolt(4 bolts).

3 Mount the Aegis ring on the gearbox cover[edit | edit source]

We use PART4: 6 small bolts and clips to fix the Aegis ring on the isolated base. The bolt also provide the path to ground.

The wave cover have to be connected to the motor.

All insolation connections must be available (marked green). The red one is not necessary.

4 The Motor bearings should be checked or changed by Elin specialist[edit | edit source]

Template:Image Template:Image

Before motor is reinstalled on machine test if rotor has no connection to ground:

  • use multimeter and measure resistance between rotor and ground
  • use high voltage tester (500V test voltage) and measure insulation between rotor and ground
  • if there is a ground fault double check if Aegis ring NDE is disconnected if present (retrofit)

in new motor designs both bearings should be isolated bearings. Therefore we should see high resistance between rotor an motor ground.

5 Mount the whole Aegis ring on motor cover[edit | edit source]

We must make sure that the gap between shaft and Aegis ring is consistent. Conductive microfibers must be in good contact with conductive metal surface of the shaft. Now we can drill the holes and fix whole Aegis ring
without the insulation base
.

6 Install back the Elin motor[edit | edit source]

After we installed the Aegis ring, the motor can be installed back. The motor should have 2 isolated bearings. Because in previous designs there was an Aegis ring on NDE please double check that this ring is deactivated and even disassembled. For a proper function there should be only one “grounding” on the motor shaft. As we changed design now the grounding is on the DE side with the big Aegis ring which was installed right now.

you can check the isolated bearings of the motor with a 500V tramegger. If the bearing is isolated, the motor shaft to ground should have high resistance (multimeter Ohm).

7 Connect the flexible grounding cables for the Aegis ring to ground[edit | edit source]

Before connect the grounding cables, please measure the ground resistance of shaft. The resistance should be very high.
Be careful about the clutch. The mechanical clutch between motor and gearbox might be conductive. Therefore it is even better if you have already measured the resistance between rotor and ground when motor was completely disassembled. Template:Image
Then we connect flexible grounding cables and measure the ground resistance of shaft. Now the resistance should be very low.

Elin Motors Aegis ring installation is done! You can also measure the with PicoScope if necessary.
