This article describes how to restore an existing configuration backup for unconfigured HP and Hirschmann switches, f.e. after switch replacement.
1 Hirschmann[edit | edit source]
1.1 Establish connection via terminal cable[edit | edit source]
Connect the RJ11-connector „V.24” at the switch with a „COM“ port of a PC with terminal emulation after VT100.

Log on with user„admin“ and password „private“.
1.4 Set IP parameters[edit | edit source]
In order to set the IP parameters you have to enter following commands in this order:
| xx.yy | is the commission Number | e.g. 10.15.34.aa |
| aa | is the IP address of the Switch | e.g. 10.15.34.140 |
- enable
- network protocol none
- network parms 10.xx.yy.aa 255.255.255.0 10.xx.yy.190
- copy system:running-config nvram:startup-config

Logout by typing:
- exit
- logout
1.5 Setting IP parameters using the Hirschmann tool HiDiscovery[edit | edit source]
Establish a connection via Ethernet cable to the switch and start the Hirschmann tool.
File:Hm1.5.1.JPG
Mark the desired switch and select Properties.
File:Hm1.5.2.JPG
Name switch according commission and location, e.g. BakSwtCtlRom001 and set IP configuration as desired.
Pattern 10.XX.YY.AAA
- XX.YY regarding to commission number -> e.g. 10.17.21.AAA
- AAA IP address of the switch -> e.g. 10.17.21.140
After setting of name and IP address, select WWW and browser will automatically open the graphical web interface.
1.5.1 Configuration via Browser[edit | edit source]
In order to open the web based interface of the switch you need a browser, like „Microsoft Internet Explorer“ in version 6+.The web based interface uses the plugin „Java“ Runtime Environment Version 1.4.2.x, 1.5.x or 6.x.
1.5.2 Log on[edit | edit source]
- Start your browser
- Ensure, that you have turned on Javascript and Java in the security settings of your browser.

- Log on as “admin” with password "private".
1.6 Restore configuration[edit | edit source]
1.6.1 Basic Setting[edit | edit source]

2 HP[edit | edit source]
After replacing a switch it is necessary to restore the old configuration. Every switch has a config backup, located on the external Backup-HDD in the folder 'config-backups'.
By factory default settings, the HP switch has no IP-Address. For restoring a backup over the web interface it is necessary to set an address over the serial interface first.
2.1 Connecting to the switch with HyperTerminal[edit | edit source]
Connect your Usb-Serial-Connector with the console port of the switch.
Go into device manager and look which port is used for the USB-Serial connector
Start Hyperterminal
- Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communicatios -> Hyperterminal
Create a new connection with any name and click OK. Set the connection mode to the COM Port according the device manager and click OK. Make the following settings:
| Bits per second | 115200 |
| Data bits | 8 |
| Parity | None |
| Stop bits | 1 |
| Flow control | Xon / Xoff |
Click at OK and press Enter to establish a connection. When connected, press any key to continue.
2.2 Setup IP address[edit | edit source]
Type config and press enter to get into the config mode. Configure a basic setup with these commands:
- vlan 1
- ip address <Ip-address><blank><Subnet Mask>
(Set IP according the drawings or check the label)
Now the switch got its IP-Address and it is possible to restore the backup file over the web interface.
2.3 Restore config file[edit | edit source]
Connect your computer with a network cable to one of the first 8 ports. Set your network adapter to a fixed IP-Address in the same range you gave the switch before, f.e. switch IP = 10.11.12.140, your IP = 10.11.12.100
- Open a web browser and type in the IP-Address of the switch
- Go to System - Updates/Downloads
- Click Update and browse for the backup file of this switch (mind the location, not every switch has the same configuration!), Keep the hook 'Reboot'
- Click Save and confirm reboot
- Wait some time until the switch is rebooted
2.4 Change passwords[edit | edit source]
After restoring the configuration it is necessary to set the passwords again, they are not saved in the configuration file.
- Enter the web interface of the switch again
- Change to Security/Device Passwords
- Choose Manager and click on <Change>
- Set the username to admin and the password according to the Line
- Confirm password
- click Save
Do the same with Operator:
- Choose Operator and click on <Change>
- Set the username to user and the password according to the Line
- Confirm password
- click Save
